Joseph was his father's favorite, and his brothers hated him for it. They threw him into a pit and sold him for twenty pieces of silver (37:28). In Egypt he was a slave and then a prisoner, for years, with no way of knowing how it would end. But Genesis tells us what was true the whole time: "the LORD was with Joseph" (39:2).

God raised him from the prison to rule over Egypt, and when the famine came, his storehouses kept Egypt and the lands around it alive, including the brothers who had sold him. When they fell before him, afraid he would finally take revenge, Joseph didn't call what they had done good. But in Hebrew, "thought" and "meant" in his answer are the same word. The brothers had a plan, and God had a plan, and God's was the one that stood.

That's why Joseph could forgive: "Fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones" (50:21). He didn't have to settle the score, because God had been in charge all along. If someone has wronged you, what they did was not good, and God doesn't say it was. But it hasn't gotten loose from His hand.
