Genesis opens before there is anything to see. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth," and the earth was "without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep" (1:1–2). No land, no life, no light. Only dark water. But God was already there: "the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."
Then He spoke, and the first thing God says in the Bible comes true at once. In Hebrew it's four words, yehi or, vayehi or: "Let there be light: and there was light." No struggle, no second attempt. God has never spoken an empty word, and every promise that follows in Scripture rests on this one.
And the light was His before there was a sun to hold it. "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). Paul reaches back to this first morning to describe what God does in a person: "God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts" (2 Corinthians 4:6). If part of your life feels like Genesis 1:2, remember who was moving over the deep. When He spoke, the darkness had to give way.
