The flood was God's judgment on a world "filled with violence" (6:11), but even then there was grace: "Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD" (6:8). God promised to bring him through, Noah built the ark as he was told, and "the LORD shut him in" (7:16). Then the water rose until it covered the earth, and for more than a year there was nothing outside but water.
