Jacob was born holding his twin brother's heel, and he spent his life grabbing: Esau's birthright, his father's blessing, every advantage he could get from his uncle Laban. Twenty years after running from Esau's anger, he was coming home, and Esau was on his way to meet him with four hundred men (32:6). That night Jacob sent everyone across the river, "and Jacob was left alone" (32:24).

Then someone took hold of him, and for once Jacob couldn't win by his own strength. One touch put his hip out of joint (32:25), and all he could do was hold on: "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me" (32:26). The man asked his name. The last time Jacob was asked who he was, he lied to get his brother's blessing. This time he said, "Jacob," and God gave him a new name: Israel (32:28).

Jacob walked into the morning limping, with the sun rising on him (32:31). He went into that night strong and came out weak, and he came out blessed. God made him weaker so He could make him new. Paul learned the same thing centuries later: "My strength is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9).
