Genesis 3 begins in a world God had called "very good" (1:31). He had given Adam and Eve a garden full of trees "pleasant to the sight, and good for food" (2:9), and held back only one. Then the serpent came with a question: "Yea, hath God said...?" (3:1). He made God's word sound unclear, then contradicted it, "Ye shall not surely die" (3:4), then accused God of keeping something good from them. The lie worked because it came wrapped in something that looked good.

What happens next is the surprise of the chapter. Adam and Eve hide among the trees, and God doesn't wait for them to come out. He comes looking: "Where art thou?" (3:9). He wasn't asking for information. He was calling sinners out of hiding, and He still does.

And before He says a word of judgment to Adam or Eve, God makes the first promise in the Bible: the woman's seed will bruise the serpent's head (3:15). The serpent will not win. Then God Himself makes them "coats of skins, and clothed them" (3:21). The chapter where sin entered the world is also the chapter where God began to rescue His people.
