Abraham waited twenty-five years for the son God promised him, and every promise God had made, a great nation, descendants like the stars, a blessing for the whole world, was going to come through Isaac. Then God told Abraham to offer him on a mountain in Moriah. The command and the promise seemed to contradict each other.

Abraham obeyed anyway. At the foot of the mountain he told his servants, "I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you" (22:5). He couldn't see how God would keep His word, but he knew He would. Hebrews says Abraham reasoned "that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead" (Hebrews 11:19).

And God did provide. Isaac walked down the mountain alive because the ram took his place on the altar. In Hebrew, "provide" is the word for "see," and Abraham named the place Jehovahjireh: the LORD will see to it (22:14). But God had provided a ram, not the lamb Abraham spoke of. Centuries later, John the Baptist saw Jesus coming and said, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).
